Seminar: 'Expanding Enrolments & Equality of Access to Higher Education'

Professor Pat Clancy will give a seminar on 'Expanding enrolments and equality of access to higher education: lessons from comparative research'. The seminar will take place in room G315 on Thursday, 16th October at 15:00.

While this topic is of relevance to the wider academic community those who specialise in social policy, education and sociology will find additonal benefits from attending, all are welcome.

Pat Clancy joined the School of Sociology at UCD in 1973. In addition to working in the School of Sociology he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences and previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology prior to the restructuring of the Faculties of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy & Sociology. Before joining the staff at UCD he worked for a number of years as a Primary School Teacher, having qualified at St. Patrick's College, Dublin. He holds a BA from University College Dublin, which he completed as an evening student. He holds a Master's degree from the University of Toronto and a PhD from University College Dublin (National University of Ireland).

His main research interests are in higher education, with a special focus on access and equity, comparative studies and policy analysis; sociology of education; education policy; and social change in Ireland. In addition to a large number of journal articles and book chapters his publications include four national studies of participation in higher education, which were funded and published by the Higher Education Authority. The most recent of these was College Entry in Focus (HEA:2001). He has been a joint editor and contributor to three books on Irish society, including Irish Society: Sociological Perspectives (IPA, 1995) and previously served as Joint Editor of The Economic and Social Review.

He has served on a variety of National Advisory and Policy groups, These include Advisor to the Action Group on Access (2001), member of the Secretariat of the National Education Convention (1993/94), member of the Advisory Committee on Third-Level Student Support (1993) and member of the Technical Work Group, which supported the work of the Steering Committee on the Future Development of Higher Education (1994/95. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy, National Committee for Economic and Social Sciences, 1996/99. He is a Founder Member and current member of the Board of Governors of the Consortium of Consortium of Higher Education Researchers (CHER) which links leading researchers and research institutes on higher education in Europe. This year he hosts the 20th Annual Conference of CHER at UCD. He was selected as a Fulbright New Century Scholar for 2005/06 joining a team of leading international scholars to explore the theme of Higher Education in the 21st Century: Global Challenge and National Response.
