Andreas Hess: Recipient of UCD President's Fellowship

Andreas Hess - Presidents Fellowship 2009

Andreas Hess, who was awarded a 2009 UCD President’s Fellowship, is currently Research Fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University. The Center, directed by Prof. Jeffrey C. Alexander and Prof. Ron Eyerman, is one of the most prestigious addresses in American sociology.

Andreas Hess is particularly interested in the life and work of the influential political scientist Judith N. Shklar.

Shklar, who taught at Harvard, had also been invited to Yale to give the famous Storrs Lectures, just before her untimely death in 1992. In his research Andreas Hess will focus on Shklar’s experience of exile and what it must have meant to leave Riga, Latvia at a young age and to emigrate to Canada and, later, to the United States – only to become the first female professor at Harvard’s Department of Government.

During his time in the States Andreas Hess will not only have a chance to visit the Harvard Archives, which house the Shklar papers, but will also interview a number of prominent American academics who had been influenced by the charismatic intellectual.

Andreas Hess is currently writing Through the Lens of Exile: The Making of Judith N. Shklar's Political Theory
