School of Sociology Tops the 2009 Irish Undergraduate Awards

The inaugural awards ceremony of the Undergraduate Awards of Ireland was held in the Royal Irish Academy on Dawson Street on 20 October 2009. The Gold Medals were presented to the forty-one winners by the President of Ireland Mary McAleese.

The winner of the Gold Medal for Sociology was Yvonne O'Reilly (UCD). Yvonne is now reading for a MSocSc in Sociology at UCD. There were winners in two other categories who UCD School of Sociology was fortunate to have had as students last year: Mark Canavan, who won the Politics Gold Medal, and Russell Ó Ríagáin, who won the Archaeology Gold Medal.

As well as that, the Deputy Chair of the Editorial Board of the Undergraduate Awards of Ireland, and the master of ceremonies at the awards ceremony, was Áine Maria Mizzoni, who is currently reading for a MSocSc in Sociology at UCD. Other Sociologists present at the awards ceremony were Prof. Stephen Mennell (UCD), Prof. Pat O'Connor (UL), Chair of the Sociology Judging Panel and Dr Iarfhlaith Watson (UCD), a member of the Sociology Judging Panel.
