Anthony Elliott

UCD has appointed Professor Anthony Elliott as Visiting Professor in the School of Sociology until 2013.  Professor Elliott is widely known for his contributions to social theory: he is the author and editor of over twenty books and his writings have been translated into sixteen languages.  His books of social theory include Social Theory and Psychoanalysis in Transition (1999) and Subject To Ourselves (2004).  His latest books are The New Individualism (2009, 2E with Charles Lemert), Contemporary Social Theory: An Introduction (2009), The Routledge Companion to Social Theory (2010) and Mobile Lives (2010 with John Urry).  In 2010 Routledge are also publishing his new textbook Globalization (with Charles Lemert, Daniel Chaffee and Eric Hsu).  Prof. Elliott has in recent years been appointed to a Chair at Flinders University, Australia – where he has also served as Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of Department – and has previously held professorial positions at the University of Kent at Canterbury and the University of the West of England, Bristol.

Prof. Elliott is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and a member of King's College, Cambridge.  He contributes to media worldwide: amongst others, he has been recently been interviewed by the BBC World Service, The Sunday Times, ABC Radio National, The Australian, BBC Radio 4, GMTV Sunday as well as European and North American radio and television networks.

As Visiting Professor in UCD School of Sociology, Prof. Elliott is taking part in various School research seminars and events, and is available to meet with postgraduate students for consultation.
