Biography:
| Iarfhlaith has been a lecturer in the School since 1996. He has been President of the Sociological Association Ireland (as well as Honorary Membership Secretary and Vice-President), elected member of the Board of the International Visual Sociology Association and an Associate Editor of Visual Studies. He has also been Managing Editor of the Irish Journal of Sociology. His research interests, publications and teaching have been in the areas of sociology of the media, visual sociology, minority languages and the media, national identity, sociology of development, sociology of knowledge and the work of Jürgen Habermas. |
Research Interests
| visual sociology, minority languages, the media, and national identity. Iarfhlaith Watson's primary research interest, in the area of identity, is in the connection between languages and national identity. In his recent publications he has focused on broadcasting in Irish in the context of national identity. In the field of Visual Sociology he has examined various symbolic devices employed to elaborate a sense of Irishness. These ideas have been presented at national and international conferences. Also on the topic of national identity, he has worked with the International Social Survey Project, especially the module on national identity fielded in 1995 and 2003. |
