Biography:
Biography In preparing this ‘self-portrait' I am conscious of the role that life's experiences plays in shaping the research interests of those of us who are privileged to have the ‘academic freedom' to select our own themes and to combine these in some part with our teaching. A life-long interest in the Irish language led to a Masters thesis, which looked at national opinion leaders' attitudes to the Irish language movement. My professional career then began with an appointment as Research Officer to the then Research and Development Unit of the Catholic Communications Institute of Ireland. The first national study of Religious Practice, Beliefs and Attitudes had been agreed in principle by the R&D. At a relatively early stage in my career, I then found myself responsible for the planning and direction of this ‘baseline' study, which was later to provide me with the basis for my PhD. A fellowship took me to the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, allowing me to combine methods courses with working with the team of Prof. Andrew Greeley. In 1976 I joined the Sociology staff at UCD, where I had opportunities to teach methods and sociology of religion courses. My early publications were mainly drawing on aspects of the baseline ‘religion' study and certain aspects of family life. This led to an invitation to participate in the network ‘Childhood as a Social Phenomenon' coordinated by the UN Vienna Centre. My research interests became increasingly focused on Childhood and it was a great delight to be part of the collective effort to successfully mainstream Childhood within Sociology and to publish with them. The European Union Cost Action 19 ‘Children's Welfare' 2001-2006 has provided further scope for research and publications with a larger network of sociologists in a greatly expanded field. Teaching and research interests also included founder-membership of the Equality Studies Centre at UCD and co-ordinating its shared courses with the Masters in Sociology programme in Language and also in Development. Childhood and Language form the main strands of my current research work. However, Religion has revived itself on my research agenda - again indirectly, through my work as Principal Investigator for Ireland's participation in the International Social Survey Programme (as successor to the pioneering work carried out by Prof. Conor K. Ward). A module on Religion is being planned for 2008, offering lots of scope for longitudinal and comparative research. Funding for this has been secured from IRCHSS under their bilateral programme with ESRC in UK and is planned jointly with colleagues in ARK (Northern Ireland Social and Political Archive, QUB and UU). This is also linked to a NORFACE project of 5 countries under the theme "The Re-emergence of Religion as a Social Force in Europe". |
