Biography:

I grew up and was educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I have lived in Germany, Australia, and England before moving to UCD in Jan 2003. My D. Phil (1991) was a sociological survey and ethnographic study of Social Effects of Unemployment in a Protestant Community in Belfast (Examiner: Rosemary Harris, University College London). I hold a unique position at UCD, a tenured statutory post, teaching medical and social anthropology / sociology in the Schools of Public Health Medicine and Population Science and Sociology at University College Dublin Schools of (UCD) I contribute to courses and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both Schools of Public Health Medicine UCD and Sociology.

I am co-director of the Masters in Public Health Degree at the School of Public Health Medicine and Population Science at University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland and Course leader for the Human Sciences modules in the Medical Degree Programme teaching medical undergraduate students.

I have extensive teaching and teaching leadership experience. As senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University I was programme leader for the MA in Research Methods. This received full mode `A' and Research Teaching recognition (required for PhD training) from the Economic and Social Research Council, UK.

In my previous post as Senior lecturer at St. Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospitals, Queen Mary, the University of London, I had responsibility for developing the very successful new Human Science and Public Health curriculum within the medical education programme. I was also trained in Medical Problem Based Learning Training (Maastricht Model) and I have used this approach while at St Bartholomew and the Royal London Hospitals.

I have acted as external examiner for four years for the Masters Degree in Health Sciences at St. Georges Medical School, University of London, (2002-2006) and was external examiner for a PhD candidate (medical anthropology) at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary.

Qualifications: Degrees in Social Anthropology and Sociology. B Sc (Joint Hons), D.Phil, PGCE, MILT, FRAI, FHEA.

Research Interests

Research interests are in health, illness and society, and in conflict theory, culture and ethnic identity. He has successfully gained major research grants and has led on various research projects. This included major ethnographic investigations of health and related need in two border villages in Northern Ireland, (commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Services, UK), and an international study of Irish Travellers Health.

Conference and Guest Speaker Contributions (National and International)

Dr Moore is considered by his peers as an expert in the field of conflict theory and his work is well recognised internationally and cited and used as key teaching material.

He has presented academic papers in the USA, Britain, Canada, South Africa, Australia, France, Korea, Norway, and was guest speaker at several major conferences including, the Conference on 'Reconciling Mobility and Social Inclusion - the Role of Employment and Social Policy' hosted by the Irish Presidency and the European Union's Directorate General for Employment and Social Affairs, and 'The Colloquium on Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Ethnically Divided Societies', (invited experts only) held in Johannesburg in 1995.

He has acted as Consultant / Advisor to several research institutes, the WHO, and various Australian media agencies.

Teaching Interests

He holds a professional teaching qualification PGCE, (Queen's University, Belfast); is a member of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (UK) (2000); gained Practitioner status from the ILT (2005); and was recently made a Fellow of the Higher Education Teaching Academy (2007).

Current Departmental Teaching Duties:

Teaching responsibilities include teaching and supporting teaching on the new undergraduate curriculum, in Medicine; and in Sociology; Systems Related Teaching; supervising research students (PhD and Masters) and related course planning and administration. This includes curriculum planning and teaching in Public Health Medicine and Epidemiology (Masters and Undergraduate level) and School of Sociology (Masters level). Key teaching areas include the sociology/anthropology of health and illness in the School of Sociology and in Public Health Medicine and conflict theory and qualitative research methods.

Teaching responsibilities include teaching and supporting teaching on the modularized undergraduate curriculum, in Sociology and Medicine; supervising research students (PhD and Masters) and related course planning and administration. This includes curriculum planning and conducting formative and summative assessment and examinations in Public Health Medicine and Epidemiology (Masters and Undergraduate level) and School of Sociology (Masters level).

I co-direct the Masters in Public Health Programme. This is considered a flagship programme within the university

I am senior tutor for the sociology of health and illness in the Dept of Sociology and senior tutor in Public Health Medicine responsible for formulating and running new courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (e.g., sociology of health and illness).

I have begun to develop de novo a stream of social anthropology at UCD (previously it did not offer anthropology). This includes, Medical Anthropology, Introduction to Social Anthropology, Ethnographic Research Methods. Also, Qualitative Research Methods (Summer/Winter Schools for Health Researchers).

I have undergone PBL (Problem Based Learning) training at St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospital, Queen Mary College, University of London and have several years experience in medical systems based teaching using this approach.
