Student Welfare

Attendance at university has become much more widely viewed as an exciting and even mandatory rite of passage with opportunities to meet new friends and to follow a course which will enhance learning and employment prospects. However, the experience of attending university can differ greatly from student to student and it is likely that many students will experience some challenges or difficulties during their time at a third level institution.

Commonly experienced problems include: finding it difficult to make friends, feeling isolated and alone in a new and large environment, problems with adjusting to a more independent way of learning, and feeling that the course you have chosen is not suited to you. Alternatively, you may be enjoying college but are experiencing problems outside UCD such as family or financial pressures or personal illness.

Remember that these situations are experienced by most of us at some point in our lives and what is important and can make a difference, is the support that we get during difficult times. A good support network can make a huge difference.

Support within the Department

  • The School Office

The School Office at the heart of the Department, acting as an important link between the large numbers of Sociology students and the academic staff.

The office has a friendly and supportive atmosphere and whilst we are not able to wave a magic wand, there is much that can be done to assist you during times of difficulties. Please come and see Deirdre or Linda in the Sociology Office. The office is often busy but don't let this put you off, be persistent or ring or email us to make an appointment when we can set aside some time to have a chat with you. Your concerns might have a simple solution or you may just feel relieved to be able to talk to someone. If you need further help then we can give you information about who can help you such as a student advisor who are trained to help students in times of difficulties.

  • Sociology Welfare Officers

Student Welfare is extremely important to us here in the School of Sociology. When you begin your degree you will be appointed a member of our academic staff to act as your welfare officer within the school, that person will become part of your support system for your entire journey through UCD.  It is a good idea to get in contact with them by visiting them in their office hour to introduce yourself. The more contact you have with us the better equipped we will be to help you if you have an academic concern or a personal problem which is affecting your work.
