Research Awards 2017 – 2018
Researchers at the College of Social Sciences and Law enjoyed an exceptionally successful year. Assistant Professor Jessica Smyth, UCD School of Archaeology, received €599,998 from the Irish Research Council’s Consolidator Laureate Award for “Passage Tomb People: investigating the social drivers of passage tomb construction”. Two researchers from the UCD School of Politics and International Relations were recipients of the Irish Research Council’s Starting Laureate Award. Assistant Professor Dawn Walsh was awarded €399,762 for a research project entitled “Independent commissions and power-sharing in post-conflict societies”. Associate Professor Samuel Brazys received €391,710 for proposal entitled “Trade-related Assistance for Development. Evidence from Micro-Level Evaluations”.
Associate Professor Barry Molloy, UCD School of Archaeology, was awarded a €1998779 European Research Council Consolidator Grant, from the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme for the project: “The Fall of 1200BC: The role of migration and conflict in social crises at end of the Bronze Age in South-eastern Europe (THE FALL)”. Associate Professor Dragos-Gheorghe Calma, UCD School of Philosophy, was awarded €1862715 European Research Council Consolidator Grant from the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme, for the project: “A Comparative Analysis of the Middle East Byzantium and the Latin West (9th-16th Centuries) Primary ERC Review Panel”.
These awards from the Irish Research Council and the European Research Council illustrate the immense work undertaken by researchers at the College. Achieving such an unprecedent number of large research grants is both a reflection and recognition of the calibre of researchers at the College.
