Lecture by Charles Taylor Tuesday January 19 2010

Charles Taylor is one of the most influential contemporary philosophers writing in English, well known across a wide range of disciplines, for example, philosophy, political science, sociology, history, theology and law. He is one of the most significant living political theorists, notable for his contributions to the theory of liberalism, and its relationship to multiculturalism and the politics of recognition , as well as his work on Hegel, the philosophy of social science and philosophy of religion . His most recent book, A Secular Age (2007) is an analysis of the evolving place of religion in society. In addition to teaching in Oxford and McGill universities for many years, he has been active in public affairs in his native Canada: he ran for Parliament four times, has sat on government advisory commissions, and contributed to public debates, most famously about the political and legal framework of multicultural societies. In 2007 he was awarded the Templeton prize for his exceptional contribution to affirming life's spiritual dimension and in 2008 the Kyoto Prize for his outstanding work in the Arts and Humanities.
