Research Interests
| My research interests are mainly in normative political theory, especially civic republican, communitarian and feminist thought, and their application to issues of citizenship, immigration and diversity; justice and moral obligations, ethics and public affairs. Research projects My research projects include: the EU FP 7 funded project ACCEPT: Tolerance and Pluralism in Europe in the 21st Century (2010-2013) http://www.accept-pluralism.eu/ ; I work on this project with Dr. Nathalie Rougier, also of SPIRe. I am also a partner in collaborative EU funded research on access to citizenship in Europe. The second phase of this project, ACIT, Access to Citizenship in Europe and its Impact on Integration, started in October 2011, and runs to March 2013, with partners the European University Institute, Edinburgh, Maastricht. and the Migration Policy Group This continues and extends the work of EUCITAC (2008-10), which created a web-based observatory of European citizenship legislation and policies, EUDO-Citizenship http://eudo-citizenship.eu/. The site carries extensive research output from the project, which is available for consultation and download. The project was co-ordinated by the European University Institute and Edinburgh, with UCD, Maastricht and the Central European University, Budapest as partners. ACIT is creating indicators on citizenship laws, their implementation and their impact on integration. Dr. Derek Hutcheson, also of SPIRe, is a co-investigator in ACIT. Kristen Jeffers is Research Assistant on the ACIT project in UCD. In 2007-8 I held an IRCHSS Senior Research Fellowship to work on my principal basic research project in normative political theory: Justice in Relationships: Interdependence and Obligations. Details of, and papers from, a previously co-ordinated project, the NORFACE seminar series, The Challenges of Immigration for the Smaller Countries of Europe (2006-8) are available at www.ucd.ie/norface/. |
