Biography:
| Professor Daniel C. Thomas is Director of the UCD Dublin European Institute (www.ucd.ie/dei) and a member of the UCD School of Politics and International Relations (www.ucd.ie/spire). His research and teaching focuses on international governance (especially the international politics of human rights) and European governance (especially EU enlargement, foreign policy and transatlantic relations). He is available to supervise doctoral theses in these areas. He earned a Ph.D. in Government at Cornell University and has held research and teaching positions at the European University Institute, Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Williams College. He has also worked in Brussels as an adviser at the European Commission's Directorate General for External Relations. He holds both US and French citizenship. Research Interests
| Professor Thomas' research addresses issues of European integration and international governance using theories of international relations, negotiation, collective action and social movement mobilization. He is currently completing a book entitled The Limits of Europe: Supranational Norms and the Struggle over EU Enlargement (Oxford University Press, under final contract) and an edited volume on Making EU Foreign Policy: National Preferences, European Norms and Common Policies (Palgrave, forthcoming 2011). He has recently led a collaborative project on “The Negotiation of EU Foreign Policy: From Divergent Preferences to Common Policies” (International Politics special issue 46:4, July 2009) and co-directed a collaborative project on "Negotiation Theory and the EU: The State of the Art" (Journal of European Public Policy special issue 17:5, July 2010). |
