Cyclists kick start World University Championship Season

Ireland World University Championship season kicked off with a strong performance from Cork IT student Miceal Concannon as he secured a twelfth place finish in the time trial at the World University Cycling Championships yesterday on a 6.8km relatively flat circuit in Antwerp, Belgium.

Mary Brennan, a NUI Galway student, performed quite well finishing in a credible 17th place behind eventual winner Loes Gunnewijk. Mary completed the two laps (13.6km) with a time of 21.18.

Concannon was joined in the 27.2 km men’s trial by Louth man Derek Finnegan who finished in 22nd position, behind Malaya Van Ruitenbeek of the Netherlands, the winner of the race.

Concannon and Finnegan will be joined in the men’s road race tomorrow (Saturday) will join Paul Brady, Ronan McLaughlin, Bryan Keane and Andrew McQuaid which will consist of 21 laps (142.8 km) of the same left hand circuit as used in the time trial. This race will start at 2pm and has 71 cyclists on the start list. Mary will compete over 13 laps (88.4 km) in a field of 33 athletes.
