Stony Brook University were able to get the better of UCD Marian in front of a large crowd in UCD. It was the first game for Marian for a number of players including American Signing Donnie Stith and former Tolka Player Brendain O’Rian.
The leading Irish scorer in the SuperLeague last season and former UCD Scholarship Student Kevin Foley also made his return to UCD Marian along with Kevin Meany who returned after a four year absence. The game was neck and neck from the start, with Niall Meany and new doing the early scoring for Marian. But great shooting by Stony Brook saw them lead after the 1st quarter 22-20. The second quarter continued to be close with both teams trading baskets and neither team able to generate much of a lead. Just before half time Kevin Meany produced one of the best plays of the game by throwing a no look over the head pass to Brendain O’Rian which set him up for a wide open layup. A three point play by Stony Brooks Dave Cooley saw Stony Brook lead 39-36 at the half.
In the second half Stony Brook came out strong hitting back to back threes part of a 9-2 run which finally saw the first true lead of the game. With three minutes to go Stony brook opened the largest league of the game, leading by 15. In the fourth quarter Marian kept battling and after a breakaway dunk by Marians new American Signing the lead was back to 9. Stony Brooks outside shooting was superb and answered with more threes to clinch the win 76-65.
Overall it was a great performance by UCD who are still in preseason mode showed they could compete with a Division 1 American School.
