Following UCD Marians win last week over Belfast Star, the boys travelled to Galway to face Moycullen in what proved to be a tough and close encounter.
On Saturday, UCD inflicted more misery on Moycullen as the Dubliners edged out a two point win 65-67 in Galway. However the UCD boys should count themselves very lucky that they came away with the win!
It’s the second time in the space of a week that the Westerners, who are still looking for their first win of the season, have lost by just two points.
Moycullen’s additions of Luke Enos and Hea......d Coach Ger Lyons have revitalised the Galway side. It’s the second time in the space of a week that the Westerners, who are still looking for their first win of the season, have lost by just two points.
“I have sympathy for Moycullen,” said UCD Marian Head Coach Fran Ryan. “They lost last week by a small margin, and we were lucky to get out with a two point win. I think the difference was our experience, we knew how to close out a game, and we had that over them”. Coach Ryan says, “Moycullen will win a lot of basketball this year”.
UCD will host UL Eagles this Saturday at the UCD Sports Centre at 7.00pm and all support is welcome
The Dublin side, touted as championship favourites when they won two pre-season tournaments, lost their opening games of this campaign to DCU Saints and Bord Gais Neptune but this was a welcome win for Coach Fran Ryan.
"To say I am relieved would be an understatement because to win in Belfast is always a difficult task," Ryan said.
“ We struggled a lot away from home last year, so to go up to Belfast and come away with a win is encouraging. The lads were very strong defensively and got the job done. We’re delighted to get the first win under our belts.
"In our opening games we did not play to our potential but we worked on the errors that have been costing us dearly in recent weeks."
The northerners welcomed their new American signing Tyrone Johnson and although he made a 15 points contribution it was not enough to save his team from their third consecutive defeat.
In a competitive opening half UCD led 39-34 at the break with Daniel James (19pts) shooting well outside the perimeter.
Scott Summersgill led the Star charge coming down the stretch but the students held firm and were deserving eight points’ winners.
