A basket from Rob Lynch in the dying seconds at the UCD Sports Centre was enough to give UL Eagles a much-needed three points away to UCD Marian.
The 56-54 win ended UL’s recent losing run and moved Mark Keenan’s side into second position in the Southern Conference.
A struggling UCD have been somewhat inconsistent and having won all preseason games and tournaments, it is disappointing to see the team not perform to their usual standards.
The students were looking to make it a third consecutive win in the Nivea For Men’s SuperLeague when they welcomed a beleaguered UL Eagles outfit on Saturday night and were confident as they have got their season back on track with back-to-back wins over Belfast Star and Moycullen respectively, while Eagles have claimed just one win from their opening four games.
However UL shocked everyone and rounded off a perfect weekend to earn two consecutive wins, against UCD on Saturday night and their latest victory coming courtesy of a 75-67 success away to the in-form DCU Saints.
UCD Marian was denied the win in the last minute of the game against UL Eagles. It was a heart wrenching game for another great supportive crowd in UCD's Sports Centre on Saturday night. An exciting game the whole way through, the lead changed on many occasions especially in the last quarter when the two teams battled for a mere one point lead.
UL lead by two at the end of the half 56-54 and the two teams came out all guns blazing in the third. With only less than two minutes on the clock and UCD up by one, American Donnie Stith stole the ball and as the crowd rose to its feet to celebrate, Stith mistimed his jump and rimmed the dunk! This score should have potentially sealed the deal for the Students as three consecutive turn overs for the Eagles meant all UCD needed to do was hold on to the ball. But with less than 30 seconds left on the clock UL stole the ball, UCD lost concentration and UL punished them with the easiest of scores and a wide open layup under the UCD basket.
The hearts of the UCD crowd sank and no cheering could save the students as with 6 seconds left and down 2 they needed a big shot which unfortunately did not come!
