UCD had a disappointing start to the season with a close last minute loss to to Dublin rivals Killester.
UCD Marian had a harsh start to the Superleague season opener against Killester at Greendale last night. It was a physical, intense game with the sides closely matched throughout but it was Killester who came out on top with a last minute score.
A low scoring first quarter saw both sides put a mere 11 points on the board. It was an exciting game and UCD went into the half 3 points up, 30 to 27.
Killester outscored Marian in the third quarter and the packed out Greendale gym cheered the home crowd on going into the 4th. However UCD were not going down without a fight and at there were 8 unanswered points from the visitors. With 34 seconds to go UCD went down by one after 2 successful free throws by Killesters Eoin Chubb. UCD had the ball and with 13 seconds on the clock, down by one, the referee call and controversial offensive foul on American John Galvin who had 27 points in the game. A furious UCD crowd cheered on their team for a final defensive attempt but Michael Westbrooks scored a further 2 free throws to put the hom59 Kille team up by 3 and give them the game with a final score of 62-59.
