UCD move closer in promotion campaign
UCD bounced back to winning ways and strolled to a comfortable and confident 3-0 win over Monaghan at the UCD Bowl to move to within two points of leaders Shelbourne.
Monaghan looked jaded following their extra-time FAI Ford Cup exit to St. Patrick’s Athletic on Monday and College utterly dominated to lead 1-0 at the break to keep up their promotion challenge.
That came on 24 minutes when skipper Ronan Finn rifled home a penalty after the run of Peter McMahon was ended with a foul by Monaghan captain Paul Whelan.
Monaghan's teenage keeper Aaron McCarey made two terrific saves to deprive Ciaran Kilduff before UCD eventually made it 2-0 on 61 minutes. Finn’s delightful dinked ball picked out Kilduff in behind the defence and his low cross was tapped home by John Reilly.
The second half was one-way traffic, and Graham Rusk added a deserved third in injury time, slotting home after bursting through the Monaghan defence.
