UCD Women's Rugby make it through 1st round of Cup

UCD 10-0 Tullow RFC

In their first match of the 2009/2010 Leinster Round Robin Cup the UCD Women’s team beat the Tullow RFC girls 10-0.

The UCD girls travelled down to Tullow RFC on Sunday 11-10-09 to play their first match of the season.  After the long summer break the UCD girls couldn’t wait to get going and Tullow weren’t going to make it easy for them. The first half was mostly defined by some very tight defending on the Tullow side as UCD put the home team under some serious pressure, however the girls in blue couldn’t seem to turn that possession into points on the scoreboard.  Having turned over the UCD ball, Tullow managed to get into the UCD 22 and were awarded a penalty to be taken 10m short of the tryline.  Only some outstanding defensive work prevented the Tullow girls from taking the lead.  Despite all the excitement the first half ended 0-0.

After some tough love from their coach the UCD girls upped their game going into the second half.  Running through what seemed like the whole Tullow backline, outside centre Olive Butler managed to ground the ball and put UCD in the lead.  The try remained unconverted though 5-0.  After some more inspired play by both forwards and backs on the UCD side, with only seconds to go, Olive Butler crossed the whitewash for the second try of the match.  After the failed conversion attempt, the match ended with a score of 10-0 for the visitors.

Coach Simon Besanson praised both Olive Butler for the two tries and Prop Alex Cain for the huge tackles she had put in throughout the match.  With the first match behind them the girls will now prepare for their upcoming match against Blackrock.
