UCD Rugby Club opened their 2009/2010 season with a Cup Fixture at home in the UCD Bowl. Opponents Clontarf who remain in the AIL 1st Division were a tough match as a season opener. The northside team also lined out former UCD Sports Scholarship students Ben Barcley and Killian Lett.

it was in fact Killian Lett who was one of the try scorers on the day. Despite the tough opposition, the game was not out of reach for the students. With only a few minutes left it UCD led 9-7 and an unfortunate yellow card brought the visitors ahead 10-9. UCD were ever so close to scoring another try but Clontarf put a final stamp on the game with another penalty to finish out the game 13-10 winners.
