UCD Marian reach semi-final of National Cup after a fantastic showdown against Ulster Elks on Saturday night in UCD.

UCD/Marian has given their season a huge boost by reaching the semi finals after an 87-81 win at home to Ulster Elks.

There was always going to be a lot at steak with both teams struggling in the League, and Elks especially still searching for their first win of the season. Ulster Elks also lined out with previous UCD Marian players and UCD scholarship students, Kevin Foley and Barry Drumm adding even more intensity to the important match.

Marian’s cause was not helped by the news that their new American Ian McCormick would miss the clash due to a shoulder injury sustained earlier in the week.

“It is great to make the semi finals and gives us all a huge lift and something to look forward to in January,” said UCD Guard Conor Meany. “It is huge for the club and we can say we have reached this stage of the competition for the second time in the last three years.

“It was a difficult prospect after the injury to Ian but we put in a really good display against a team who gave us a good run and won’t be long away from getting their first win of the season.”

In the clashes Killester ended UL Eagles’ unbeaten run to book their place in the semi finals of the Men’s SuperLeague National Cup, while reigning cup champions UCC Demons have set up a last four showdown with fierce rivals Neptune after victory over Belfast Star.

This means that UCD take on league leaders Killester in the semi-final. This will be a very challenging encounter however UCD have the confidence in the win over Killester earlier in the season.
