UCD AFC have reached the Final of the Irish Universities Collingwood Cup in the attempt to retain the title for 2010.
Following yesterdays tight encounter in the Collingwood Cup semi-final with Jordanstown, UCD now face NUIG in the Irish Universities Cup final today at 2.00pm at The Brandywell to set up a repeat of last season's decider, which the Belfield side won with a Robbie Creevy goal at The Mardyke.
Excitement surrounded the competition at the possibility of an all Ulster final, however Magee fell at the hands of NUIG in a comfortable 4-1 win.
The Irish Colleges Collingwood Cup kicked off on Monday, hosted by Magee College. UCD were winners of last week’s All-Ireland Colleges and Universities Football league and are looking to retain the cup to add to the impressive collection of silverware for this year.
The first day did not exactly go according to plan and UCD had a scare in the first round against NUI Maynooth. A tight game ended with at 2-1 win for UCD following goals from David McMillan and Sean Houston with Ross Cullinane replying for Maynooth.
The second day was equally challenging for the UCD boys as they needed extra time and a penalty shoot out to see them past UCC in their quarter final tie.
Peter McMahon proved to be the UCD match-winner in a 1-0 victory over Jordanstown in the semi-final. Mark Langtry supplied a superb ball from the left that McMahon struck firmly past a helpless Matt Quinn with 15 minutes of a tight encounter left.
UCD dominated most of the opening half but James Doherty missed a glorious opportunity to put Jordanstown ahead from the penalty spot when Mark McGinley made a superb save.
Last season's hero Creevy was introduced into midfield after the break to good effect and UCD eventually found the winning strike through McMahon.
Meanwhile, Mary Immaculate College Limerick captured the Duggan Cup with a 4-1 win over Coleraine. Goals from Rob O'Halloran, Conor Lane, Thomas O'Shea and John Byrne had Noel O'Connor's side well in control. Simon Crawley replied for the Northern side.
