After a long winter season of college golf, the All Ireland colleges’ league came to its final stages on a wet and windy weekend in Glasson Golf Club, Athlone.

The UCD Men’s Golf team have made it through to the All Ireland Colleges Final which will be held on the 16th of April next. The UCD team faced Waterford in the Quarter Finals and won 5-0 with a convincing performance to put them into the Semi Final against the University of Ulster Jordanstown, who beat the UCD boys in the final of this tournament last year.

In shocking golfing conditions in Athlone, the UCD team played inspiring golf to win 3 ½ to 1 ½ in the Semi finals. The UCD team was lead by Captain Gerard Kelly (ICGA Stroke play winner 09) who had a 3&2 win. New comer to the side for the 2010 season Michael Magee played at number two on the line up. Michael managed to keep the momentum going as he won his match by holing out a fantastic shot into the 16th hole to close out his match also with a 3&2 victory. Richard Maher played at number three and also played solid golf considering the conditions on the day. Richard managed to seal the tie for UCD by winning his match 5&4 and with this, which also ensured UCD a place in the finals.

Jamie Rothwell played at number four and had a good win in the quarter final, but in challenging conditions in the semi final his match was called in off the course once the tie was over. John Greene (UCD Captain 08/09) played at number five. John who is a long time server to the UCD Golf team played wonderful golf in the quarter final with a convincing victory on the 17th which had put UCD into the Semi Final and he followed that up with an all square result when his match was also called in.

The UCD team now look forward to the grand final of the league series were they will face NUI Maynooth who have had comfortable victories throughout the league series to-date.
