The Swimming and Waterpolo Celtic Nations took place in Wales last weekend, and proved a successful weekend for all UCD’s representatives involved.
Texan Swimmer, Julieann Galloway showed impressive form in winning her three individual events (200 Individual medley (2m 25s), 200 frontcrawl (2m 13s), 100 Individual Medley (1m 09s)) and also swimming a leg of the ladies freestyle relay team which one their final. Thomas Higgins also featured in the swimming event putting in an epic performance appearing in the final of the 200m Freestyle.
The overall swimming standings resulted in Scotland beating Ireland by a mere 7 points, and Wales coming in third. In the mens’ Waterpolo we saw some excellent defending and tactical work from Jack Baker , with Dave Kelly making some impressive saves as the only man to play every minute of every match, Barry Kelly scored some crucial goals. Alison Banks was the soul UCD player on the ladies team but she more than made up for it with strong defensive play and shook off being violently fouled in the Wales game to keep her head in the game.
The men’s Waterpolo team put up a fight but eventually lost the final to Scotland. The ladies team came third overall. While Ireland did come second overall, UCD certainly provided many winning performances over the weekend. With a former Olympian at its helm of its Swimming arm and great progress being made in the Waterpolo divisions the opportunities that will be offered by the new 50metre pool being built on-campus, it makes the Club one of the most exciting prospects for UCD sport.
