University College Dublin Swim Team continued their winning ways in a successful Colours meet with Trinity College Dublin on Sunday 11 April.
The annual event held at Trinity’s pool on campus has always been a firm favourite for both universities, that have a long tradition of rivalry in the sport.
This year UCD reigned supreme winning the Meet by 55 points to 51 points. UCD Swim Team Coach Earl McCarthy commented, ‘This year the Colours event between UCD and Trinity proved particularly competitive. Convincing performances by both male and female UCD swimmers indicates how UCD Swim Team is moving from strength to strength. With new swimmers coming through, it bodes well for the future of the club and makes the prospect of training and competing in our own swimming pool on-campus all the more exciting’.
Strong individual performances from David Cooney, Vinnie McArdle, Sarah Caufield and Sarah Bolton boosted UCD’s points score. UCD’s male relay teams also returned to their winning ways beating their Trinity counterparts in the 4 X 25 and 4 x 50 Medley and Freestyle relays.
The event marked a successful year for Team Captains, Claire O’Donovan and Niall McCauley who have worked hard to nurture the Team before the arrival of the new 50 metre pool. It also acted as a perfect practice ground for the upcoming Irish Nationals that will see UCD’s Swim Team compete with Swimming Clubs across Ireland.
