It was a successful weekend for UCD Athletics Club at the OutdoorTrack and Field Intervarsities in Santry with a total of 14 medals won at the event.
Mairead Murphy started off the championships with a silver medal in the 100m Hurdles in a time of 14.60. She added another silver medal to her tally in the 100m and took gold in the javelin with a new UCD record of 32.56m. Shauna Cannon also finished on the podium in the 100m with a bronze in a time of 12.67. Injury then forced Shauna out of the 200m final and both Mairead and Shauna were forced to withdraw from the 4x100m due to injury. Ciara Everard produced a fantastic front running performance to take gold in the 800m in a time of 2.12 to add to her 800m gold from the Indoors in February. Ciara later ran a strong final 100m in the 400m to take bronze, bringing her Intervarsity medal count to three in her first year of college.
Valuable team points were picked up in other events during thechampionships. Fiona Clinton narrowly missed out on bronze in the3000m and the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams finished 6th and 4threspectively.The first medal of the day in the men's competition was won by DaveTierney. Dave threw a personal best of 13.82m in the shot putt to takebronze narrowly missing out on a silver by 3cm. Dave later set a newIUAA record to take gold in the 16kg Weight for Distance with a throwof 10.35, beating the existing record by 38cm and smashing his own UCD record by 89cm. In only his second year of throwing, Dave hopefully has a few more medals and records in him. The 400m final had two UCD athletes. Eoin Mulhall came second in a personal best time of 48.82. This is Eoin's 4th 400m Intervarsity medal having won two silvers last year and gold at the Indoors in February. Jamie Davis finished in 4th, beating a 3 year old personal best in a time of 49.65. In the 3000m Steeplechase, Robert Corbally won silver to add to his silver from 2 years ago in the same event.
The pole vault produced two medals for UCD with Ruairi O'Briain taking silver with a jump of 4.50m, and Stuart Greene winning bronze with a clearance of 4.00m. In the relays, the 4x100m team set a new UCD record of 41.97 in the heat before winning silver in the final. The 4x400m team came in with a bronze medal to finish off the championships. There were also personal bests for several athletes on the day. Being early in the athletics season, these PBs should hopefully be improved.The men's team finished 3rd and the ladies team finished 4th. OverallUCDAC finished 4th.
