UCD Ladies Hockey Club got their European campaign off to the perfect start gaining their first win in Europe at their first attempt against Rotweiss Wettingen .
zAfter absorbing some early pressure in the first ten minutes UCD settled into the game and on the 13 minute skipper Lisa Jacob scored the perfect team goal . It all started at left back with Laura Wilson and the final pass by Rosie Carrrigan was sublime and Jacob deft touch left the keeper stranded - UCD off to the dream start. Wettingen had a good chance to equalise in the 18 min but O Flanagan saved well. Orla O'Shea was causing the Swiss side frustration all day with her tackling and in the 23rd minute she turned that form into attack with a shot that skimmed the post and was narrowly missed by the diving Caitriona McGilp. UCD were definitely in the driving seat as a minute latter McGilp just missed when a rebound fell to her and soon after a corner won by Rachel Burke resulted in Rosie Carrigan just unable to direct the ball goal ward after the keeper directed it to her. The Swiss had their chances to but they were unable to test O'Flanagan in goal as the first was too high and the second was saved by Kerry McComish.
In the second half the Swiss came at UCD a little bit harder, pressing much higher and when on 10 minutes in they won a corner things looked bad for college. But when Megan Tennant Humphreys perfectly intercepted the switch UCD broke and left Jacob a 1/1 with the keeper but the keeper was able to kept the score at 1-0. Indeed this might have been the one real opportunity for UCD to extend their lead. But it was their defence which stared on the day with McComish commanding the top of the circle. 22 minutes into the half the Swiss got one last chance to equalise but again Tennant Humphreys number 1 running was too much for them as she blocked down the straight shot. UCD then absorbed the Swiss pressure for the last 10 minutes to leave them with a 5 points win.
UCD play the Belgium Club Royal Uccle tomorrow at 2pm in what could prove to be the pool decider as the Belgien side beat Cambrai of France 4-1 earlier in the day.
