UCD fell to a second defeat in two days to miss out on a final shot as Cambrai grabbed the only goal through Gwenaelle Dutel struck from play in the 19th minute.

In combination with Royal Uccle’s win over Rottweiss Wettingen, a draw would have seen the students advance to one of Monday’s twin ‘finals’ but they were unable to get back on terms.

As a result, the French side’s victory left both teams level on seven points with an equal goal difference but the French side progressed courtesy on a tie-breaker of goals scored. The games started at tremendous pace with the ball flashing across the french goal twice in the first 5 minutes but neither time could anyone get a stick on it. In the 6th minute cambrai got their first opportunity but there short corner strike was blocked down by Megan Tennant Humphreys. on 15 mnutes Caitriona McGilp forced the first save from the french keeper with a reverse effort which was easily delt with and ten minutes she had make her second after Rosie Carrigan won a corner quicky followed by a second thanks to excellent work from leigh Pelow.

UCD were making all the play and creating all the chances but on 28 minutes a ball went astray out of defence falling to Dutel and the deflection on the shot left Grace O'Flannagan powerless in goals. Ucd had on more chance on 33 minutes when a beautiful flowing move started by McGilp resulted in a shot from Orla O'Shea but the shot was saved. This was followed by a short corner to the french but it came to nothing to leave the score 1-0 at half time.

The second half was just a story of missed chances from UCD. Rachel Burke was dagerous the whole game and Rosie Carrigan was chasing havoc with her silky skills and the two started the half with with interplay between themselves resulting in a shot from Lisa Jacob which was saved. In the fifth minute Jacob shot wide. UCD won a corner though but the shot from Laura Wilson was blocked by the number 1 runner. In the ninth Minute McGilp flashed across goal. In the 14th minute the french won a short which came to nothing and shot wide two minutes later. On 17 minutes Burke won a short crner with nothing coming again.

UCD then had a chance when the french centre forward was yellowed for a reckless diving tackle from behind with 23 minuts gone. # minutes later Carrigan won a corner for the college but Kerry McComish's shot flew just wide then on 32 minutes another short corner resulted in lisa Jacob doing the same. Time was running out for UCD and indeed this would be the last chance of the half. A minute later Cambrai won one last corner themselves but it was easily delt with by Tennant Humphreys and McComish but UCD were unable to get the ball up the other end as the french had put very few forward and the game came to a disappointing close for UCD.

UCD now play the Czech hosts Slavia Praha - who lost all three of their group games - at 10.45am on Monday in the 5th to 8th place play-offs.
