The following night a comprehensive victory over a Dundalk side topping the table was achieved in a manner which surely satisfied manager Martin Russell and all those involved.

UCD punished some uncharacteristic mistakes by Dundalk to run out convincing winners at the UCD Bowl and move to within five points of the summit with a game in hand.

Both teams were missing a key central defender. UCD’s Andy Boyle is in Ukraine with the Under 19 International team, Dundalk captain Liam Burns was absent through injury but two goals in the space of two minutes stunned Ian Foster's side.

In the 14th minute, Garry Breen was forced into giving away a corner by Ciaran Kilduff and, from Chris Mulhall's delivery, David McMillan rose to power a free header past Peter Cherrie.

Worse was to follow for the Lilywhites two minutes later as Greg Bolger carried the ball unchallenged for almost 50 yards before slipping a pass through for Kilduff, who finished with aplomb.

Fahrudin Kuduzovic pulled Dundalk back into the game with a great solo effort seven minutes before the break.

However, Paul Corry finished off a swift counter-attack in first-half stoppage time to seal the win.

UCD’s next challenge is an FAI Cup third round tie in Drogheda, where a three-nil victory on the opening night gave impetus to the Students’ return to the top tier.
