Dublin under 21 hurlers captured their fourth title at this grade, which started in 1965, after a pulsating encounter against an excellent Wexford team.
The team was back boned by nine UCD students who contributed enormously to this great victory.Wexford made the brighter start and led by 6 points to 2 after 18 minutes but Dublin clawed their way back into the game when Barra O’ Rourke, a UCD scholarship student and an All Ireland Under 21 medal winner earlier this year, moved out to play in the middle of the field.
UCD students Ronan Walsh, Rob O’ Loughlin and Conor Clinton defended bravely in the first half when Dublin were under enormous pressure from a strong Wexford team including UCD students Shane Tomkins and Michael O’ Reagan.
Wexford led by the minimum at half time. The Dubs were indebted to a strong second half display which made up for a nervous opening period. Dublin took the lead for the first time in the 50th minute when UCD student Daire Plunket raced through to kick a goal to the top corner of the net.
With Wexford tiring Dublin drove on inspired by UCD scholarship students and Fitzgibbon players Liam Rushe and Oisin Gough.Niall McMorrow a UCD Fresher and Sport Scholarship student scored 3 valuable points in the third quarter before being replaced by UCDs Ciaran Brennan. Yet another UCD Scholarship student and dual player, Rory O’Carroll watched frantically from the side linen as his team mates drove on and ran out comfortable winners by 6 points at the final whistle.
Dublin now play Galway in the All Ireland semi final in early August.
