Belfield Brigade do just enough to topple battling Templeogue Synge St.
Dublin senior footballer Michael Fitzsimons enjoyed victory over his intercounty team-mates Eoghan O’Gara and Denis Bastick as UCD progressed past Synger in this Evening Herald Dublin SFC second round clash at Kiltipper Road on Thursday night.
With John O’Loughlin and Ciaran Lyng amoung their high-profile absentees, UCD took a while to show their undoubted quality but they settled down to open up an early three-point lead through three scores from lively corner-forward, Ciaran Kelly.
Westmeath under-21 footballer, John Heslin, who caused major problems against the Dubs in the second half of the Leinster final, impressed for the students and was central to their first half lead of 0-6 to 0-2.
UCD strengthened their lead early in the second half but Bastick points gave Templeogue Synge St momentum which was added to by Declan Treanor’s goal in the final minutes.
It was not to be for Templeogue however. Despite the generous amount of injury time, Synge Street were unable to force their way through a composed UCD.
UCD are now through to the quarter final of the Dublin Senior Football Championships which they last won in 2006.
