On the weekend of the 1st 2nd and 3rd of October, UCD Sailing club made the journey down to Cork for the student yachting nationals hosted in the Royal Cork Yacht Club by CIT and UCC.
This 3 day event serves as qualification for the student yachting world cup, a prestigious international event held in France every year. The first day brought a strong south westerly breeze and a sharp wave, both of which posed a challenge to the 6 teams involved. UCD’s team struggled to get into their rhythm and posted a scoreline of 3,4,6,6. Despite this disappointing start, on the second day the team came out all guns blazing and managed to record a 2,4,1,1 scoreline. This was enough to bag them the daily prize and to place them in 3rd position overall going into the final day, within touching distance of the 1st place that would guarantee them qualification for the student yachting world cup.
The final day involved a coastal race from Crosshaven to Kinsale. The trip would take approximately 4 hours. The weather gods contrived to bring a beautiful mix of sunshine and wind, perfect sailing conditions. After an intense 4 hours, UCD finished 2nd to UCC by about 10 seconds, an incredibly close margin after such a long race and a testament to the closeness of the racing at this event. In the end UCD finished up in 3rd position overall which after such a disappointing first day was a fantastic achievement.
