The UCD Men’s Golf Club produced stunning final round come back to win the Irish Intervarsity Strokeplay Team event by three shots in the dunes of Enniscrone Golf Club.
With a six stroke deficit in the team event going into the final round the UCD team of John Greene, Jamie Rothwell, Stephen Walsh and Colum Kenny produced a 5-under combined tally to overtake the current holders NUI Maynooth by three shots. This was the first victory by UCD in four years.
In the individual strokeplay for the famed Roger Greene Cup, UCD’s John Greene produced a three under par round of 70 to enter the final nine hole play-off with a 2 shot lead over current Irish international Kelan McDonagh of Maynooth with fellow UCD player Jamie Rothwell a further shot back. In the final nine holes two birdies on the first and 6th saw Greene take a three shot lead over McDonagh with two to play. A bogie on the 8th hole saw the deficit reduced to two and this cushion was enough for John to take the victory with two shots to spare over NUI Maynooths McDonagh.
This was Greene’s third victory of a season to go along with the South of Ireland Championship and Waterford Scratch Cup victories which he achieved earlier in the year
Jamie Rothwell produced a final nine holes level par to remain in third place for the team, while Stephen Walsh finished strongly to move up to a final finishing position of 5th.
