UCD MHC reached the semi finals of the Intervarsities Championships but lost out as two goals from Ali Smith ended their hunt for varsities to eventual winner CIT in the semi final stages.

They started strong in the tournament beating arch rival Dublin University 2-0 with a drag flick from Shane O'Donnell and a beautiful solo effort from Captain Tim Hill. This was followed by a 10-0 win over RCSI, with forward Paddy O'Connor scoring five as well as a goal from Shane Nolan and braces from Richard Jones and Scott Margetson on his varsities debut. This put college through to the semi finals after the first day of competition but despite a goal from their new corner threat Shane O'Donnell two goals from Andy Gray as well as one from Colin Manning in their third game meant that UCC topped the group at the end of the 2nd day.

They then went onto meet CIT, laden with numerous under age internationals as well as Cork All Star Footballer Aidan Walsh, in the semi final. Again UCD started the stronger with Shane O'Donnell putting a now typical dragflick into the bottom corner on 12 minutes but John Hobbs switched corner move for CIT meant that it was 1-1 at half time. It was obviously Hobbs half time team talk that proved the stronger as 3 minutes after half time CIT intercepted a ball in their own circle and counter attacked quickly to leave Ireland A international Ali Smith one on one with UCD Keeper George Smyth and it was with great pleasure that the Cork man put the ball passed the Kilkenny man to make it 2-1 and followed this 2 minutes latter with one of the goals of the tournament, firing it into the bottom left hand corner on his reverse to leave UCD playing catch up for the rest of the half.

Indeed this would prove to be the only two times CIT entered UCD's circle as UCD bombarded the CIT circle from the left touch line and despite winning 4 corners could not convert with CIT goalkeeper in fine fettle. It was after one of these corners that skipper Hill was upended and UCD awarded a penalty flick with 5 minutes to go and Ben Dobson duly obliged to put the ball away for his new college. However it would prove to be UCD's last goal of the match and indeed the tournament.

CIT progressed into the final against DCU to where they won their first ever Intervarsities title 2-1 with 2 corner goals from Roger Gray the answer to Luke Haydens finish for DCU.
