UCD Boat Club has undoubtedly been one of the most successful clubs in recent years. The Club aims to ensure that the 2010/2011 season is no different with the oppointment of expert coaches, elite athletes and the highest quality of equipment, the club is one to watch
The club has attracted a very promising talent in Turlough Hughes who accepted a scholarship from UCD Sport and UCDBC. Turlough came 10th in the World Junior Heavyweight Single Sculls over the Summer. Although he is still only 18 he is earmarked for greater things. Added to this, the club has 3 athletes returning from the Henley winning 4 and have welcomed back Sean Jacob to the club who is a chosen member of the
Pat McDonagh together with Martin Feeley are coordinating the Senior and Intermediate groupings. It’s good to know that these squads are in good hands. Between Pat Gannon, Pat McDonagh and Martin Feeley very few clubs in the world can boast Olympians at all levels of coaching.
With success brings challenges and this is seen in balancing out the aspiration of promising international to the demands of performing for UCD.
The Novice grouping is showing signs of another good year. UCD has won 3 Novice 8 Championships in the last 4 years. This year’s squad has all the hallmarks of the usual eclectic bunch thrown in the mixing pot that is UCD Boat Club. Pat Gannon is heading up the Novice Group and they are becoming well accustomed to 6K Ergs followed by a Leg Trembling weight session. Results on the water have been strong.
The UCD 8 raced in the first session at Neptune Head. The boat was in a league of its own and won the head by some 30 seconds from the reigning Intermediate 8 champions,
The second session saw UCD race in a coxless four. Again, the crew made light of the opposition and even over took some intermediate 8’s during the race. Their time was good enough for 4th overall and won the fours section by over 20 seconds.
Sean Jacob regained his Dublin Sculling Ladder to add to his Single Sculls title from the National Champs. Something which he is achieving on a near annual basis. UCD entered
The Irish Indoor Championships took place last weekend. Sean Jacob was narrowly beaten into second place but managed a fast time of 6:04. Averaging 1:31 for the race. Anthony English, who came 10th in the Lightweight U23 Pairs during the Summer came home 3nd at Open Lightweight. Turlough Hughes was second also in the U23 Heavy Weight section.

The main race will begin at 9:30am on March 17th with the winning crew being presented with the Gannon Cup by the Lord Major at the GPO as part of the main parade later in the day. It has the making of a good family day out.
The UCD Boat Club and UCD Sport would like encourage as many alumni to follow the race and will be looking to organize an alumni function on St Patricks Day and it would be great to see as many people at the race as we can muster. St Patrick’s Day is Thursday this year and could make a nice long weekend for those outside of
