The Ladies hockey team made the trip to Belfast this weekend to play Belfast Harlequins in the 2nd round of the Irish Senior Cup.
UCD beat Belfast Harlequins in the quarter finals 2 years ago on their way to winning the title overall. This time around, UCD controlled much of the game for the opening 10mins. They enjoyed a lot of possession in the opposition's 25 but failed to create any clear goal scoring opportunities.
The opening goal came against the run of play when Belfast Harlequins scored from a one-on-one against the keeper after a mistake from UCD's defence. Buoyed by the break, UCD came out fighting in the second half and once again controlled the game and maintained majority of possession. The equaliser came after a scrap in the circle, Rachel Burke eventually scrambling the ball into the goal. Rachel Burke then added another goal, giving the Belfielders a slender lead. The second goal was a classier affair, Burke reversing the ball, high into the net passed the Harlequins keeper, after some nice build up play from Chloe Watkins and Caroline Hill.
The students held on until the end to win the game 2-1 and advance to the quarter finals where they will play Cork Harlequins in Belfield on Saturday February 19th.
