UCD Boxing Club have continued their excellent run of form by adding the Fred Tiedt Cup, for the annual Colours boxing competition, to the Morrow Cup (Junior Intervarsities) and the Gilmore Cup (Senior intervarsites).

The contest was held in the Trinity Exam Hall, the stronghold of Trinity boxing. Despite this the UCD Team had strong support at the away venue. James Brady, on his debut for the club, got the event off to a positive start by claiming the first victory of the night at Light Heavy (81kg). This set the tone for the night’s event as one after another UCD notched up the wins.

In a seven bout competition Shona Maguire, the only female representative on the team, beat Gillian. Muirhead to claim the fourth consecutive win and the Colours title for the visitors. This achievement was made even more impressive owing to the fact that in doing so Shona overturned the verdict of their previous encounter, the week before in the Astra Hall, where Muirhead took the victory. The next two contests were extremely closely contested, to the extent that they were both split decision. Unfortunately they were in favour of the host (TCD).

The last fight of the night saw the UCD Colours Captain, Alan O’Reilly fly the flag one last time against Thomas Spencer, the current Senior Intervarsities Heavy Weight Champion. Alan, who moved up a weight class, was undaunted by his opponent and determined to end the night on a personal high. In a very intense fight that had a perfect blend of fighting and boxing (Heart and Head), the sharper, more technical O’Reilly won out against an aggressive and worthy opponent in Spencer. For his efforts Alan was awarded Boxer of the Tournament.

The general consensus on the night was that the UCD team possessed superior fitness levels due, in no small part, to the intensive five day training regime introduced by the coaching staff this year.

UCD boxers will return to the Astra Hall (for the third and final time this college year) at 7pm on Thursday (3^rd of March) for the “Brawl in the Hall” event as part of the Sigfest programme. The fight card will also feature members of the UCD GAA Club stepping into the ring. All support would be greatly welcomed as the card features a range of skill levels from beginners, right up to club standard.
