Hosts UCD were far too classy for a disappointing NUIG in the evening quarter-final of the Sigerson Cup. Inspired by the splendid John Heslin and John O'Loughlin, UCD were always in charge and finished out the game with a convincing 0-18 to 2-3 win.

Westmeath midfielder Heslin offered another reminder of his considerable potential with an accomplished performance. UCD thundered into the contest, accumulating a 0-5 to 0-2 advantage at the end of the opening quarter, but NUIG then struck for goal.

Mayo's Jason Doherty, the only NUIG forward to pose a threat, lofted in a '45' and Neil Douglas provided a deft flick to send the ball past Michael Savage. UCD quickly re-established control, though, with Heslin dictating affairs at midfield and O'Loughlin's bustling aggression at half-forward bothering NUIG.

They moved 0-11 to 1-2 ahead at the interval and hit another five without reply after the turnaround to build up a commanding lead. UCD's forwards were causing havoc, with O'Loughlin, Ciaran Lyng and Rob Kelly all finding their range.

NUIG ended a 34-minute search for a score when substitute Mark McHugh kicked a tidy point before Ciaran Lyng replied. Galway panellist Greg Higgins grabbed a late consolation goal for NUIG, but UCD's thoughts had already switched to this afternoon's tussle with UCC.
