Timothy Hill scored a precious goal at Belfield to extend the gap between themselves and their opponents in Leinster’s division one as the Lucanite’s travails in front of goal meant it was all that the students needed to bag their first win of the season.
He scored ten minutes from time from John Brennan’s cross after the
Kilkenny man had worked a neat one-two from a free inside the 25 to finally
break Weston’s defences.
It was threatening to be a frustrating day for UCD as they dominated the
game but that all important goal seemed to be alluding them. Indeed in the
first 11 minutes they had 6 short corners but Weston dogged defence and
excellent saves from Ian Clarke kept the ball out. Weston had their chances too
as Enda Tucker missed out on a one-on-one and had a drag-flick denied by former
Glenanne club mate Gareth Carragher.
UCD prevailed however and when they received a free inside the 25 which
was played into the centre to John Brennan and the Vice Captain connected with
his Captain by sweeping the ball into the top of the circle where Hill deftly
deflected the ball into the bottom right hand corner.
Once Hill had put a goal between the teams, Weston did fight back but
Simon Pearson and Vikram Singh were unable to level matters from decent
openings, though they did draw a last minute corner but Ben Dobson ran out to
charge the straight strike down to leave the score 1-0 at full time.
