University of Limerick and Garda combined to produce the fastest eight at the huge Skibbereen Grand League regatta at the National Rowing Centre in Cork yesterday.

John Keohane of Lee Valley was the fastest single sculler at the event, which overcame foggy conditions early on. The event had a big increase in numbers on last year which was a big boost to the competition.

Although Trinity took the overall honours at the Irish University Championships on Saturday at the same venue, UCD were the fastest senior eight, and retained their Wylie Cup crown as this success trumped Queen’s win in the intermediate eight and Trinity won the novice eight.

UCD also won the Bank of Ireland trophy for women, also taking the senior eights crown, while Trinity and NUIG took the intermediate and novice titles respectively.

Overall Results:

1 Trinity 66 points, 2 Queen’s University 52, 3 UCD 49, 4 UCC 24, 5 University of Limerick 14, 6 Cork IT 9.
