The UCD Swimming Club capped off their season with a victory over NUI Galway over the weekend, securing the first ever CUSAI Swimming League Championships. The team, led by Coach Earl McCarthy, topped NUI Galway 92 to 74.
The CUSAI League included university teams from around the country, who participated in dual-meet type competitions against each other to compete for the title.
The CUSAI final victory finished off a remarkable year for UCD Swimming, having won the triple events of Women’s, Men’s and Overall best team at Intervarsity’s andnow the CUSAI league. Overall it has been a year of rapid growth for UCD Swimming and a lot of progress has been made in anticipation of the new aquatic facility opening next year.
‘I am extremely pleased with the team’s performance this year, we ranged from elite individual achievements from Aisling Cooney finishing 9th at European Championships in December to a broad all inclusive team approach to winning Varsity's and the CUSAI league. Overall a great reflection of the commitment and hard work of these student-athletes,’ Coach McCarthy said.
Other UCD Swimming victories this year included a first-place Women’s, Men’s and overall performance at the Irish Intervarsity Championships in February, as well as sending eight athletes to compete for Ireland at the Celtic Nations Championships earlier this month in Belfast. This swimming team was also led by Coach McCarthy and finished second overall behind Scotland.
With the much-anticipated 50-metre pool under construction on the Belfield campus, the future success of UCD Swimming remains optimistic in the years to come.
