The Discipline of Actuarial Science at UCD was established in 1991 by Professor P. J. Boland with the introduction of the undergraduate Bachelor of Actuarial and Financial Studies degree (BAFS).
This programme, together with the Higher Diploma in Actuarial Science, now ranks UCD as amongst the foremost universities in Ireland and the UK for the training of future actuaries. Graduates from our courses have enjoyed exceptional career opportunities with the vast majority eventually qualifying as actuaries.
Actuarial Science is part of the UCD School of Mathematical Sciences. Two programmes are offered:
- the four-year undergraduate degree programme leading to the Bachelor of Actuarial and Financial Studies (BAFS) and
- the one-year postgraduate Higher Diploma in Actuarial Science (H. Dip. Act. Sci.)
Both programmes are fully accredited by the UK Actuarial Profession and offer potential exemption from the core technical subjects (CT 1-8) of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. In addition the undergraduate BAFS degree also offers potential exemption from the first core applications subject (CA1) of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and is the first undergraduate programme in Ireland (and also the UK) to do so.
Academic staff includes two fully qualified actuaries with extensive industry experience.
