What is this Structured Elective sequence about?
This Structured Elective comprises a minimum of three modules in German language learning at levels 2 and 3. It builds on modules offered at level 1, which are prerequisites for entry to these modules, and which take you first to a post intermediate and then to an advanced level in written and spoken German. There are two possible pathways: beginners and non-beginners. Both pathways are intensive and require a significant amount of autonomous learning.
Why should I take this Structured Elective sequence?
Level two modules aim to consolidate the command of all basic and some advanced grammatical structures and to build vocabulary and range of expression. On completion of the modules, learners should be able to understand longer and more complex texts on topics of social and educational interest, to summarise ideas, express opinions, formulate coherent arguments and to discuss both personal and familiar topics with a good degree of fluency and in an appropriate register. The module also emphasizes listening comprehension: on completion, students should be able to understand German sufficiently well to cope in a German-speaking environment, either working or academically.
Level three modules GER30080 and GER30090 build on these skills. Materials and concepts are of greater complexity than at level three, and you will progress to an advanced and nuanced command of grammar. At level three, you will refine your range of expression in both written and oral work, further developing fluency and the ability to communicate spontaneously on a broad range of issues including historical, political, social and personal topics.
How will this Structured Elective sequence benefit me?
This Structured Elective is aimed at users who wish to become proficient in oral and written German, reaching a level that would allow them to function effectively in general working environments or to follow non-specialised programmes of study in a German-speaking country (ca. B2+ to C1 of the CEFR). They are particularly suitable if you wish to spend an Erasmus year abroad at a German-speaking host institution, to apply for the ELA teaching assistant scheme in a German-speaking country or to pursue internship or training opportunities abroad. This Structured Elective sequence is not suitable for those wishing to learn German for special purposes or for basic/recreational needs such as travel or personal communications.
