“The revolution that founded this state nearly 100 years ago was a revolution of the young; that revolution ultimately created a republic; it’s up to you to define what the values of that republic should and will be…”

In his address to one of the 2009 BA graduating groups, Professor Diarmaid Ferriter shared with students lessons from Ireland’s past and urged them to work together to apply the skills acquired at university to the challenges facing modern Ireland.

Diarmaid Ferriter is Professor of Modern Irish History in the UCD School of History & Archives. His research spans twentieth century Ireland and he is the author of the critically acclaimed 2007 book Judging Dev, a perspective on one of Ireland's most prominent leaders Eamon de Valera.
