Professor Ian O’Donnell – The kind of society we mold, molds us in return
Criminology offers two lifelong challenges: the intellectual pursuit; and the translation of ideas into practical social activities that have a transformative impact.
In his address to the 2009 graduates of Business, Financial Services and Business & Legal Studies, Professor Ian O’Donnell gave a history of the study of Criminology, and explained the interdisciplinary work done in very diverse fields of society.
Professor Ian O’Donnell joined the UCD Institute of Criminology in 2000. Professor O’Donnell sat as a magistrate on the Oxford Bench and was a member of the Board of Visitors at Pentonville Prison in London. He is also a member of the International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation. Professor O’Donnell’s research interests include Criminal Justice Policy, Sentencing, Penal Reform, Imprisonment, History of Crime and Punishment, Violence.
