In June 2009, over 55,000 people will sit the Irish Leaving Certificate examination. Students will test their knowledge in more than thirty subject areas, from the standard Irish, English and Maths to the more specialist Japanese, Agricultural Economics and Classical Studies.

In the UCD Lectures of Leaving Cert Students series, students can delve deeper into some the subjects they pursue in secondary school. Study at university builds on prior learning, and encourages students to ask their own questions – and derive their own answers. It’s about scrutinising facts and events – looking at things differently and understanding the “why”.

In the series, some of UCD’s leading academics look at Leaving Certificate topics in new ways; Why was Lady MacBeth paranoid? Why are enzymes important? Why did WWI happen?

For those Leaving Certificate students for whom the exam is in the recent, or even distant past, the series may re-awaken dormant knowledge or perhaps inspire another read of classic novels, dramatic works or even science textbooks.
