Why not come at maths from a different angle?
Professor Gary McGuire, UCD School of Mathematical Sciences, teaches and researches in subjects ranging from cryptography, and discrete mathematics to algebra and algebraic geometry. He also works in number theory - UCD is the only Irish university to have a research group dedicated to this core area of pure mathematics.
For students of Honours Mathematics, Professor McGuire talks about geometry, curves and calculus. He explains how the methods of calculus could be applied to solve geometry or problems. He also notes how the Newton–Raphson method can be used to estimate a solution of a cubic equation.
For all Mathematics students, Professor McGuire provides a brief review of the concepts of coordinate geometry. He looks at methods of deriving the intersection of two lines, the intersection of a line and a circle and elaborates on how the distance formula can be used to find the radius.
