Who is the Graduate Diploma in University Teaching and Learning (UTL) for?

The Graduate Diploma UTL is an in-service programme for those who teach in higher education (i.e. NQF level 7 or above). It offers academics, at different stages of their careers, opportunities to review and improve their teaching skills and their understanding of approaches and theories in effective higher education.  Academics at the start of their careers will develop skills to work effectively in the classroom and learn to draw on pedagogical theory in informing their teaching.  The Diploma offers more experienced staff the opportunity to re-energise their teaching and to try out new approaches to assessment and curriculum design.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to review and improve your teaching – and the learning experience of students by:

  • Applying validated critical review methods to your own practice.
  • Exploring and critiquing the literature on teaching and learning in higher education using it to inform your self-managed professional development.
  • Exploring and practising various participatory teaching techniques.
How will I benefit?

The Graduate Diploma UTL will enable you to structure your classes on the basis of research evidence.  It will show you how to continually review and improve them and how to document that you have applied professional standards to your teaching.

What is the programme about?

The Graduate Diploma UTL is focused on supporting teachers in Higher Education to encourage and enable their students to become critical thinkers.  All of the activities of the programme are firmly related to and, whenever possible, actually located in the real and current teaching duties of the participants. The programme is developmental and invites participants to continually reflect on and improve their own practice.
