Student Learning

Purpose of the Award

This award acknowledges the efforts and achievements of staff who are responsible for innovative approaches to supporting student learning and /or the provision of an effective and positive learning environment in UCD.  Recipients of this award will not necessarily have a direct teaching role.   Examples of staff encouraged to apply include, but are not limited to: educational development staff, library staff, student advisers, school, programme and student support staff, educational technologists, technical and IT support staff.

Award Details

Up to five awards with a maximum value of €1,000 each for individual applications and €2,000 each for group applications are available to attend teaching and learning events and/or purchase materials or equipment relating to teaching development with the approval of the relevant head of unit.  This is not a grant.


These awards are supported by the Strategic Innovation Fund II.


The scheme is open to UCD staff holding permanent appointments and staff on fixed term contracts until at least December 2012, with the exclusion of academic staff in schools and colleges, who are encouraged to consider the teaching award schemes.

Conditions for Award Winners

Winners will be expected to showcase innovations in supporting student learning on the Teaching and Learning website as appropriate.

Adjudication criteria

Eligible applications will be adjudicated on the basis of either:

  • The development of an innovative service, activity or procedure which supports student learning and /or the provision of an effective and positive learning environment in UCD  
  • the rationale for this development
  • the benefits which resulted from the development


  • Improvements made to an existing service, activity or procedure which supports student learning and /or the provision of an effective and positive learning environment in UCD
  • the rationale for the improvements
  • the benefits which resulted from the improvements


Application Procedure

Application Procedure

Applications should be made via the online application form.  There are two categories: group and individual.  Staff members may submit both an individual and a group application but only one application per staff member per category will be accepted.  See the Awards and Grants Calendar for application dates.  Winning applications will be selected by the adjudication panel on the basis of the adjudication criteria.

Application Requirements:

There are two application requirements:

1. Completion of the online application form in line with the adjudication criteria.

2. Two nominations in support of the application, including one nomination from the applicant(s)’ head of unit and one from a UCD colleague (academic/administrative/techincal) or UCD student(s). 

Note: supporting nominations must be submitted by the deadline 1400 hrs on 17th November 2011, therefore, applications should be submitted in sufficient time to allow for this.  It is the responsibility of applicants to give nominators sufficient notice.  Applicants must discuss their applications with their nominators in advance of the closing date.

Guidelines for Nominators

  • Having discussed the application with the applicant in advance of the closing date, nominators are asked to write (between 100-200 words) in its support.  Evidence of the achievement in innovative support of student learning may be cited where applicable.
  • Nominators should forward their nominations to by 14.00 hrs on 17th November 2011.
