Teaching Awards and Grants / College Teaching Award

Purpose of award

The purpose of the College Teaching Awards is to acknowledge specific efforts and achievements in teaching and learning by the recipients, appropriate to the current stage of their careers. Such work should show clear alignment with UCD's education strategy. This award will financially support the recipient to further develop this work by involvement with similar teaching activities nationally and internationally.

Award Details:

The award consists of a €1000 travel bursary funded by each college to attend agreed teaching and learning events. Up to two award per college will be made.

These awards are supported by UCD colleges.

 

 

Adjudication criteria:

Applications will be assessed using the following criteria:

1. Level of specific achievements

2. a. Level to which teaching philosophy has been developed
    b. Level to which pedagogy underpinning the teaching philosophy has been applied successfully
    c. Contribution to teaching & learning at school/subject level


3. Level to which feedback has been used to inform the applicant's teaching practice.


On-line applications and nominations will be judged by an adjudication panel.  

 

Application Procedure

Application Requirements:





  1. Two nominations from either the applicant's Head of School and/or School Head of Teaching and/or Head of Subject.  Note: supporting nominations must be submitted to tl@ucd.ie by the submission date.  See below for nominator guidelines.
  2. A brief summary, (600 words maximum)outlining specific achievements from the last two years, including at least two of the following:
    • The use of teaching approaches that have demonstrated an understanding of student learning needs and show evidence of motivating students to learn.
    • Development and delivery of modules giving evidence of clearly defined learning outcomes aligned with effective teaching, learning and assessment strategies.
    • A contribution to curriculum or programme development at school/subject level.
    • A track record of contribution to student support and development.
  3. A short statement of the applicant's teaching philosophy (300 words maximum) and a statement outlining how this pedagogy has been applied in order to improve student learning (300 words maximum).
  4. A description of how feedback has been used to inform the applicant's teaching practice (300 words maximum).

Guidelines for Nominators

Both applications and nominations must be submitted by the College Teaching Award Submission Date   therefore, nominators and applicants should discuss and review the application well in advance.   Nominators should forward their statement of support to tl@ucd.ie



Each nominator should submit a short statement (maximum 500 words) in support of the application. The statement should explain why the applicant should receive a college teaching award and should advance the nominee’s claims for excellence and support these claims by drawing on evidence from different sources. Evidence may be cited to highlight some/all of the following where appropriate:

 

  • The applicant’s teaching achievements to date and their potential for further achievement in teaching & learning 
  • The impact and/or importance of the applicant’s contribution to teaching & learning at school and subject level. 
  • The value of the applicant’s stated contribution in a number of teaching activities including: curriculum development, module design and review; assessment; student engagement etc. 
  • The extent to which the applicant has used feedback to inform their teaching practice and the degree of alignment between the applicant’s work and the priorities of the Education Strategy.
  • Any other area viewed as important by the nominator.
